Fort McMurray Catholic Board of Education to Implement Mandatory Vaccination for Employees

(Fort McMurray, AB, October 15, 2021)-  Immunization has been proven to be the most effective means to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This in turn preserves in-person learning and helps prevent outbreaks.

We have a responsibility to those we serve and employ, including our students under the age of 12 who are unable to be immunized at this point in time. Fort McMurray Catholic Schools will require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

It has been continually stated by Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, the best way to protect ourselves and children who cannot be immunized is to be fully vaccinated.

“Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is committed to doing whatever we can in order to keep staff and students as safe as possible,” explains Superintendent George McGuigan. “Mandating vaccinations is another step in the layering of measures we have in place in our schools.  We have exceptional staff who care deeply about our children. We will move forward together.”

Fort McMurray Catholic School Division will require all employees to declare their vaccination status to the Human Resources Department by October 29, 2021. Fort McMurray Catholic School Division will require all employees to be fully vaccinated by December 20th, 2021 unless an employee requires an accommodation pursuant to a protected ground under the Alberta Human Rights Act or participates in a regular, rapid testing program that ensures they are not COVID-19 positive while in contact with students and other employees.

Individuals who are in direct contact with students and/or employees must also be fully vaccinated in order to enter school in our Division. This includes independent contractors and volunteers. Fort McMurray Catholic Schools will not require parents or students to be vaccinated.

“Provincial and federal health authorities advise that immunization is the most effective means to prevent the spread of Covid-19, mitigate outbreaks, and protect ourselves and children who cannot yet be vaccinated,” states Board Chair Cathie Langmead. “The Fort McMurray Catholic Board of Education will continue to assess reasonable measures that could be beneficial to the health and safety of our students and staff.”

More information regarding timelines and logistics will be shared directly with employees via email.
