Wildfire-School Restoration

Wildfire Situation – School Restoration Work

Extensive restoration work has been ongoing in our schools since early June. Our insurance company (Alberta School Boards Insurance Exchange – ASBIE) is responsible for the restoration of our schools. The restoration work and the insurance claim are coordinated by the insurance adjuster (Crawford & Company) who has extensive experience with recovery from large natural disasters including the Slave Lake Wildfire and the recent floods in Southern Alberta. The lead contractor for the restoration work is ServiceMaster of Edmonton, a professional restoration company that is certified through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC).

Most of our elementary schools have now been turned back over to our custodial staff who are now waxing floors and getting the schools ready for the new school year. Given their size and complexity, the restoration work for our High Schools is taking more time but the schools will be ready for the 2016 Convocation Ceremony and Graduation celebrations scheduled for August 26th. All schools will be ready for the first day of school on Tuesday September 6th.

As announced earlier, Good Shepherd and Father Beauregard Schools will not open in September 2016 given the more extensive smoke damage and the debris removal and construction expected to take place in the fall and winter.   The two schools will reopen in September 2017.   The two schools will relocated temporarily to Father Turcotte School for School Year 2016/17.

Recovery of Personal Items

Students from Holy Trinity and Father Mercredi High Schools had an opportunity to recover the contents of their lockers in early July. High School Locker contents will again be available for pick-up on August 29th and 30th.

The recovery of personal items of for students in elementary schools (except Good Shepherd and Father Beauregard) will be available for pick-up at the school starting on August 22nd. A timeline for the recovery of personal items from Good Shepherd and Father Beauregard is not yet available.

2016/17 Enrolment Survey

The Fort McMurray Wildfire has impacted our families immensely. More than 500 of our students lost their home while many others have homes that were damaged or located in restricted areas.

In order to prepare for the beginning of the new school year, it is important for schools to have accurate enrolment projection. We are therefore asking parents of students to complete a short survey to provide their school with an indication as to where their children will attend school in September 2016.

The survey only takes a few minutes to complete but will greatly assist our schools in their preparation for the first day of school.

To access the survey, please click on this link:   2016 Enrolment Survey

We understand that some families may have already provided this information to their school through other means. We do ask that you take a few minutes to complete this survey to help us consolidate our data and make the necessary preparations for the new school year. We do appreciate your assistance.
