Aboriginal Learners
Fort McMurray Catholic Schools support the delivery of education programs and services so that all students have opportunities to develop an understanding of and appreciation for Aboriginal histories, cultures and lifestyles.
Establishing partnerships and engaging FNMI Students, parents and communities in the education journey contributes to student successes. At Fort McMurray Catholic Schools, our network includes principals, educatiors, support staff, administration, FNMI students, communities, parents and Aboriginal liasons.
All help to develop and foster a healthy and positive relationship between home and school by:
- creating a welcoming and safe school environment
- taking a one-student-at-a-time approach to assist individual students
- developing programs to suit the student
- tracking student attendance and overall progress
- ensuring students realize that high school completion is an attainable goal
Aboriginal Learner Data Collection Initiative
The Aboriginal Learner Data Collection Initiative (ALDCI) supports the goals of the FMNI Education Policy Framework. The ALDCI helps to identify Aboriginal learners in the province through voluntary self-identification during the student registration process. Collecting this data is an important step to improving the assessment of the educational attainment of Aboriginal learners.
More information on the ALDCI is available in the following documents. Alberta’s school communities are invited to use these documents to create greater awareness of this initiative with students, parents and others.
Thanks to Tawanee Joseph who gave his blessings to share this video with you and the youth of Fort McMurray. He is looking forward to coming here to work with our Aboriginal Entrepreneurship program.
Here is the video him and team made to promote the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic and Olympic Games.
