Changes to Alberta Employment Standards

In June 2017, the Government of Alberta introduced Bill 17 – Fair and Family-Friendly Workplaces Act that made significant changes to the Employment Standards Code and Labour Relations Code.   The new Employment Standards Amendment Regulations were only issued in December 2017 providing the details of the changes made fo the code.

The employer and representatives from the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA)and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) are reviewing the new regulations and will soon be discussing how this will impact existing Collective Agreements and how changes will be implemented.  It is important to note that, although the new code became effective on January 1, 2018, many of the new provisions will not take effect until January 2019 since they are already covered under existing Collective Agreements: 

“Section 95 (2) of the Fair and Family-Friendly Workplace Act states that Part 2 of the former Act continues to apply with respect to a Collective Agreement that in effect on the coming into force of this Act until a new Collective Agreement is entered into or until January 1, 2019, whichever occurs first” 

The District will continue to inform staff of any decisions or changes are made in respect to the implementation of the new Employment Standards Code.
