Our core values

The vision of Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is to make our students “Responsible Catholic Christian Citizens”.

We take to heart the great commandment of Jesus Christ: Love the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul and strength …and love your neighbour as yourself” (Mt.22).  This means that we value Persons, Community, Responsibility and Learning.

The Fort McMurray Catholic School District respects the unique value, dignity and gifts that God gives each person in our school community.  Each student is invited and challenged to grow to his or her full potential.  We support them in their development and struggles, responding to their learning styles and educational needs. Respecting the vocation and gifts of each staff member, we ensure them effective working conditions and life-long learning opportunities.

Our faith in God as Trinity-Father, Son and Spirit reveals that to be a person is to be in community and relationship with others.  We see our schools and classrooms as communities created by faith.  Frequent prayer nurtures our communion with God and each other.

We value responsibility

“This is the greatest and first commandment…you shall love the Lord…and your neighbour as yourself” (Mt.22)

We believe each person has an ability to respond to Christ’s calling. We expect students and staff to act in the Spirit of Jesus Christ, this is their responsibility.  The Fort McMurray Catholic School’s practice of discipline educates students to take responsibility for the consequences of their actions.  We use these consequences as an opportunity and motivation for developing virtue and character, celebrating when personal achievements happen.  We believe that following Christ entails responsibility for both our personal well-being and that of our relationships and community.

The Fort McMurray Catholic School District embraces learning as a value.  God is Truth and Wisdom; the Spirit of Christ leads us into all truth.  We lead our students into a wisdom and knowledge of God and the world.  Truth, knowledge, reason, and methods of critical inquiry are essential to the Catholic mind.  Whatever is true, good and beautiful is embraced as permeated by Christ’s Spirit.  All pedagogical, educational, and discipline methods that lead our students into truth are embraced.
